Read the first chapter

I felt them watching me from a distance. As I moved through the crowd, I sensed the Luciano brothers’ eyes on my back.
Dante, Nico, Stefan, and Angelo—the infamous Boardwalk Kings.

Each time my father forced me to attend one of their parties, they haunted me with their cold, intense gazes. My mother was a no-show for the charity gala. And without her here, my dad put even more pressure on me to perform.
To act the part.

After all, this was a performance, nothing more than a show for the Lucianos. They ran Atlantic City and owned everyone in it—including my family. All their loyal subjects were here to play their role in this sick and twisted game.
I hated every second.

My dad tugged on my arm when I glanced over at Dante Luciano, the oldest of the Mafia heirs. Dad didn’t like when I stared at his employers for too long. He also didn’t want me to draw too much attention to myself.

One day, Dante would become the boss. The Don of the Boardwalk Mafia. Tall and handsome, Dante wore a black designer suit that matched the color of his hair, which was short on the sides and top, styled off his forehead.

He stood between his brothers, Stefan and Angelo. The twins were only a few grades ahead of me when we were in school and around twenty-five.

Nicodemus was the bastard of the family. Unlike his father and brothers, Nico had blond hair and blue eyes. But they all had the same olive complexion.
All four owned every speck of fabric attached to their muscular bodies. But regardless of their expensive attire, they looked out of place surrounded by politicians and benefactors.

“Try to smile,” Dad said to me under his breath as we moved around the room. “You look miserable.”

Because I am.

I offered fake smiles to people. And when they stopped us to chat, I spoke about my time at Columbia University and how I was about to graduate. One more week until I started my new job at Hoffman Stone as a junior financial analyst.

My dad asked me to work with him, but I wanted nothing to do with the Lucianos and their criminal operation.
Bored out of my mind, I drank flutes of champagne like a champ, pretending I didn’t hate wearing an invisible mask for strangers. However, appearances were everything. My dad and his employers cared about the optics.

Bella Parisi strolled over to me, a silky red dress swaying as she walked, and flicked her black hair over her shoulder. “Having fun?”

“Is that a joke?” I lowered my voice and turned away from my dad. “Save me. Please.”

She tapped my dad on the shoulder. “Mr. Vianello, do you mind if I steal your lovely daughter for a few minutes?”

He nodded and then looked at me. “Don’t be too long. I have a few more people I want you to meet.”

“Five minutes,” I promised, even though I wanted to run back to school in Manhattan and never come back to Atlantic City.

Bella steered me toward the bar and ordered our drinks. “So, how’s it going? Did your dad get any new investors for his hedge fund?”

“Yeah, a few.”

After the bartender slid the glasses in front of us, we moved away from the bar.

I sipped from the glass. “He’s using me to attract new clients.”

I had a gift for numbers.
My father said I had the Midas touch with the stock market. Last year, I helped him return a 10X profit to his clients.
We played a game every year on my birthday. Dad would give me ten thousand dollars to invest, but I had to do the research. And if I didn’t get a return on my investment, he would lower the amount each year.

Thankfully, I was good at choosing winners. The only downside was the funds were in my father’s name. So even if I wanted to sell it all and get the fuck out of here, I needed his permission or a death certificate to get my hands on it.

Bella downed most of the martini and groaned. “At least you’re making money off these people. Politicians only talk about themselves. If I have to hear another one of their stupid stories, I will blow my fucking brains out with my dad’s gun.”

I let my eyes wander for a moment, and as expected, I had four sets of eyes on me.

“They always stare at you,” Bella commented. “I wish they’d look at me like that.” She waggled her eyebrows. “The things I would let the Luciano brothers do to me.”

“It’s kinda weird. I wish they would come up to me and say something.”

“Maybe that’s the point. The kings like to make people feel insignificant. Like they own them.”

“Because they do. Everyone in this room is only here out of fear or loyalty.”

“You get to live in Manhattan.” Bella sighed. “Lucky bitch. I’d kill for a dream job and an apartment in the city. But, instead, I have to stay here and play the role of the dutiful Mafia daughter.”

“Your dad will arrange your marriage.” I took a few steps toward the outdoor patio off the right side of the room. “Sorry, girl. But you never had a choice.”

“That’s why I need to have all the fun I can now,” she countered with a sour expression. “It’s only a matter of time before he sets me up with some fat, lazy gunman in the Luciano army.”

I looked across the room and spotted Stefan, Angelo, and Nico hanging out by the bar. Dante was with their father, Salvatore Luciano, talking to the mayor of Atlantic City.

Their family got Mayor Blackwell elected. That was how they got so many deals for their casino to pass through the legislature. Having friends in high places also kept the authorities off their backs.

Nico drank from a highball glass, shoving a hand through his blond hair as he watched me. Like he was afraid I would disappear into thin air if he didn’t keep his blue eyes on me.

“Bella,” Mr. Parisi called out, his hand raised to beckon his daughter.

He was a Made man and next in line to become a captain. Every man in Bella’s family had been in the Mafia. So neither of us had many options for friends. Our parents didn’t like us talking to outsiders. It was too risky to let them into our real lives.
Bella was my only friend.

When I moved to New York City to attend college, I didn’t get the whole experience. I was always afraid that someone would find out what my dad did for the Lucianos.

“Ugh,” Bella grunted, rolling her eyes. “Duty calls. I’ll find you when I’m free.”

With my dad talking to new clients, I saw this as an opportunity to take a break—a few minutes of normalcy.

Alone.

So I set the empty glass on the table by the patio doors and went outside. We were on the twentieth floor of the Portofino Hotel and Casino and had the perfect view of the Atlantic Ocean. It was dark, with nothing more than the moonlight and strings of fairy lights illuminating the oversized balcony that wrapped around the side of the building.

Men and women dressed in elegant gowns and tuxedos drank and smoked cigars. I walked past a group of men who ogled me, heading toward the end of the balcony where it was the darkest. Maybe my dad wouldn’t find me until the end of the night. That was my only hope at this point.

From the moment I stepped into the casino, I wanted to leave. I knew I would see the Luciano brothers, who were a reminder of everything I ever lost. The childhood I never got to have. A mother who was sent away because she couldn’t handle the stress of this lifestyle.

My dad was rarely home and left me with the staff. I never had boyfriends, only quickies and hookups. Relationships were short-lived. Whenever I made a new friend or met a guy, they were suddenly too busy.

Even in Manhattan, someone followed me at Columbia University. I wasn’t sure if it was for my protection or if the Lucianos had someone tail me to ensure I wasn’t telling their secrets. God forbid I got too close to someone and accidentally said something stupid.
But I knew the cost.

I would never tell.
I stopped in front of the balcony and stared at the ocean. From a distance, orchestra music flowed out from the party. Combined with the waves crashing on the beach below me, it was peaceful.

Gripping the railing, I breathed in the salty air and closed my eyes, thinking about happier times. In the morning, I was leaving to go back to Manhattan. And in one week, I would graduate and start my new job. Everything in my life was falling into place.

I was almost free.

“A girl like you shouldn’t be out here by yourself,” a man said from behind me.

I spun around to face him. He was probably in his mid-thirties and wore a black suit, greasy brown hair slicked to the side.

“I’d like to be alone. So if you don’t mind.”
And then I turned my back to him, hoping he would take a hint.

“Actually,” he said, his voice deep and rough. “I do mind.” He clutched my shoulder and forced me to face him. “When a man tells a little girl like you to do something, you listen.”

I laughed at the audacity of this asshole and shoved at his arm, but he didn’t budge. “Get your hands off me!”

He was about eight inches taller and had fifty pounds on me. So when he wrapped his fingers around my throat, I couldn’t move with his big body pressed against mine.

“Get off me, you creep!” I wriggled in his arms, trying to break free. He hiked up my dress, and I kicked him in the balls.
“You little bitch,” he snapped, his face twisting in anger. “I’m gonna make you pay for that.”

Before he could make good on his promise, I heard several sets of shoes slap the ground, approaching us with speed.

“Get your slimy fucking hands off her,” a man said, his voice like gravel.

The man holding me tipped his head back and laughed. “This traitorous bitch isn’t yours. I’m just taking what her old man owes us.”

Traitor?

What the fuck?

He had the wrong girl.
What does my dad owe him?

I tilted my head and saw Dante, Angelo, Stefan, and Nico Luciano. Of course, they were here. The four of them were always watching me.
This time, I was glad to see them.

“Ava Vianello belongs to the Boardwalk Kings,” Nico said with fire behind his words. “Bonetti, take your fucking hands off her before we break them.”

He laughed in my face, loosening his grip just enough for me to take a breath. “I’m doing the family a favor.”

Dante grabbed his left arm while Angelo yanked on the other. And before I knew what was happening, they had him over the railing, hanging on for dear life.

Panicked, he clutched the stone for support. “What the fuck? I’m a made man. You can’t do this.”

Dante laughed. “Who fucking made you?”

“We did.” Angelo sneered, making the deep scar on his right cheek more noticeable. “And you’re out of the family.”

Stefan brushed his knuckles beneath his chin. “Vai a farti fottere.”
In Italian it roughly translated to, Go fuck yourself.

“Next time, you’ll listen,” Nico said with a cocky smirk. Then he laughed. “Oh, wait. There won’t be another time.”

Dante peeled his fingers from the railing. “See ya in the afterlife, you cock sucking piece of shit.”

He fell in slow motion, his screams sending a shiver down my spine. My heart raced, clamoring out of my chest with each strangled breath. And when I finally found the nerve to look at them, I couldn’t manage more than a few words.

“Why did he say my dad owes you?”

Angelo scrubbed a hand across the scar on his cheek and shrugged. “Doesn’t matter. He’s a dead man.”

Nico nodded in agreement, licking his lips as his gaze traveled up and down my body. Dante burned a hole through me with his eyes while Stefan stripped me naked with one look.
The four of them walked away.

“Hey! I think I deserve to know what that was all about.”

Dante snickered with his back to me. “Go back to the party, Miss Vianello. Your father is looking for you.”
